City Park History

About 1916 it appeared the ladies of the Kiel Frauenverein had an idea that a system of public parks were a necessity and of great benefit to present and future generations; the ladies agreed to acquire by purchase the Stoever property, located on Fourth Street, and some three years later purchased from the Kiel Woodenware Co. The three lots adjoining the Stoever lots were on the west, making a total of six city lots.  At the time of the purchase of the foregoing properties by the Frauenverein, it was proposed by the members that as soon as these properties were paid for and were free from encumbrance; they would be donated to the City of Kiel for park purposes.  On the 5th day of November, 1921, deeds to the foregoing six lots were presented to the Common Council of the City of Kiel, transferring these valuable properties to the citizens of the city.  The properties consisted of all the space between 4th and 5th Streets and Paine Street and the alley.  The property purchased by the city, between 5th and 6th street, joined with the property purchased by the Frauenverien and was to be turned into a city park.
